Required Minimum Distribution
The year the owner of an IRA turns 70½, they are required to take a required
minimum distribution (RMD) no later than April 1 of the next year and then by December 31 for every subsequent year. Failing to do so, subjects the taxpayer to a 50% excise tax on any amount of the RMD not taken timely from the IRA.
